My Story

My Story

My name is Bryan and I'm ORIGINALLY FROM MANASSAS, VA! I WENT TO Undergrad AT CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY IN NEWPORT NEWS, VA FROM 2007-2011 AND MAJORED IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES AND MINORED IN JOURNALISM AND THEATER. IN UNDERGRAD, I WAS A STUDENT AMBASSADOR (AKA TOUR GUIDE), ORIENTATION LEADER, INVOLVED IN MY FRATERNITY, A MEMBER AND INSTRUCTOR OF THE BALLROOM DANCE SOCIETY, AND EVEN HAD MY OWN RADIO SHOW!

AFTER GRADUATION, I WORKED AT MY ALMA MATER IN THE OFFICE OF ADMISSION AS WELL AS ALUMNI RELATIONS AND UNIVERSITY EVENTS. MOST RECENTLY I LIVED RIGHT OUTSIDE OF PITTSBURGH, PA AND SERVED AS EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP INSTRUCTOR FOR the National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho, Inc.

CURRENTLY, I AM finishing MY MASTER’S DEGREE IN HIGHER EDUCATION and Student Affairs AT VIRGINIA TECH! Additionally, I SERVE AS THE ASSISTANT RESIDENTIAL LEARNING COORDINATOR FOR AN ALL-MALE, FIRST YEAR RESIDENCE HALL ON CAMPUS. I HAVE A SPECIAL INTEREST IN MEN AND MASCULINITIES, have been INVOLVED ON THE MEN'S OUTREACH COMMITTEE FOR THE WOMEN'S CENTER AT VIRGINIA TECH, SERVEd AS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, worked briefly in the Intercultural Engagement Center and serve on the inclusion committee for VT Housing and Residence Life.

This summer, I had the awesome opportunity to work at the University of Alaska Anchorage! For someone who has never left the country, this was the farthest away that I have ever been from home, but completely worth it!

I AM A #COMMNERD FOR LIFE, LOVER OF MUSIC, COMICS, AND BOWTIES!

Personal Interests

Hiking

My interest in the outdoors has fluctuated over the years. However, my love of being outdoors increased when I spent the summer of 2015 in Alaska! There is nothing like being on the top of a mountain with a view to clear your head and feel calm.

Food

While eating food is fun, my creative side comes out when I get in the kitchen. Making something that is delicious out of random ingredients left over in your pantry is so rewarding. And, of course, it looks good on Instagram too!

Music/Theater

I have always had the knack for singing and being on stage. Though I don't get the opportunity lately to sing and act as I did in high school and undergrad, I love to attend performances large and small. Getting dressed up and spending an evening a the theatre is the perfect night out for me!

Developing Healthy MASCULINITIES

Over the course of my graduate school experience, I have identified an interest in developing healthy masculinities development. Working in an all-male residence hall paired with my experience with fraternities, I see a need for addressing how college men navigate and develop in a college environment to explore their true, authentic self.

Intercultural Engagement

Having the opportunity to work in the Intercultural Engagement Center as well as explore important concepts in multicultural affairs, I have identified that this work is important to creating positive, inclusive environments. I have since been interested in personally and professionally developing my competence in intercultural dialogue and creating spaces where students can explore and understand the world around them.

Digital Space

Coming from a Communication Studies background, I love all things digital and social media. What I am most interested in is how students engage in a digital space while attending college and how that may help or hinder their ability to find community. While I don't have all the answers, I am committed to finding new and innovative ways to connect with students in a digital space and help them find community wherever that may be.

Connecting Others to their passion

Ultimately, the reason why I am in the higher education profession is to help students explore who they are and discover their passion. So often students search for a degree to make the most money or to go into a profession that their parents went into. It is my hope that through my work, I can help students identify their true calling so that they may grow personally and live a life that makes a positive impact to those around them.
